Most “smart home” marketing sells convenience. The gadgets in this post sell something more concrete: a lower utility bill or a repair bill avoided. If a device doesn’t do one of those two things, it’s a toy, which is fine — just don’t budget for it as an investment.

Smart plugs on “always-on” electronics are the fastest payback in the category. Game consoles, TVs, and chargers pull standby power even when off — a smart plug that fully cuts power on a schedule (overnight, while you’re at work) typically pays for itself within a few months on devices that are otherwise never unplugged. The setup that saves money: schedule-based automation, not just “turn off with my voice,” since the savings come from consistency you won’t maintain manually.

A leak sensor near your water heater, washing machine, and under sinks is cheap insurance, not a luxury. These run modestly and text you the moment they detect moisture — cheap enough that the math only needs to work once in the device’s lifetime to be worth it, given what a slow leak behind a wall can cost to fix.

Smart thermostats pay off fastest in homes with inconsistent occupancy — if you’re out of the house on a predictable schedule, a thermostat that learns it (or that you program properly, which most owners never do) saves real money. If someone’s usually home, the savings shrink and the case gets weaker; it becomes more about comfort than payback.

Where the “smart” label adds cost without adding savings: smart light bulbs bought purely for color-changing effects, smart displays used mainly as a kitchen clock, robot vacuums bought to replace a cheap stick vacuum used twice a month. None of these are bad products — they’re just priced and marketed as savings when they’re really convenience or entertainment purchases, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re buying.

Coming soon: a simple framework for deciding if any specific smart home device will pay for itself in your house.
