The test for a cleaning gadget is simple: does it remove a chore from your week, or does it just move the same chore onto a different device you now also have to clean and charge? Sort by that, and most of the category becomes an easy yes or no.
Robot vacuums are a genuine time-saver in the right home — mostly open floor plans, mostly hard floor or low-pile carpet, no cords or tassels on the floor. Homes with lots of stairs, thick rugs with fringe, or a puppy that finds the robot fascinating are a worse fit. Mapping (not just random-bounce navigation) is the feature worth paying more for; without it, cleanings take longer and miss corners more often.
A good cordless stick vacuum replaces the broom-and-dustpan routine, not the upright. It’s the right tool for daily quick cleanups and genuinely gets used more often than a bulky upright because it’s easier to grab. It’s the wrong tool as your only vacuum if you have wall-to-wall carpet and deep-cleaning needs — battery run time and suction both drop on thick carpet.
Where to be skeptical: steam mops and robot mop combos. Steam alone doesn’t lift dried-on spills the way a scrub does, and most robot mop attachments just drag a damp pad around rather than scrubbing — fine for light dust, not a replacement for mopping a genuinely dirty floor by hand periodically.
UV sanitizing wands and “UV-C cleaning” gadgets deserve real scrutiny. Effective UV disinfection needs a specific wavelength, intensity, and exposure time that’s hard to guarantee from a handheld wand waved over a surface for a few seconds — treat marketing claims here more skeptically than most other categories.
